College Courses in Graphic Design

Education in Graphic Design

If you are interested in a career in graphic design and still in college, consider taking courses in web design and arts.  Getting a well-rounded education in graphic design, as well as in any career you may choose, is an essential part of success in your field of interest in addition to internships.

Read course descriptions of different graphic design classes and see what they offer and how it can enhance your design skills and impress your employers at your internship.  Some key things to look for when inquiring about the curriculum are:

  • 2-D and 3-D design
  • Branding and identity
  • Packaging
  • Web applications
  • History of Graphic Design
  • Design and Color Theory
  • Illustration
  • Print and Editorial Design

It is also important to be knowledgeable of the software entailed in graphic design.  This includes all Adobe applications such as Illustrator, InDesign, PageMaker, and Photoshop.  Quark Xpress is also an essential application to be familiar with.

Tip:

Include the courses that you have taken in your resume if you’ve never applied for an internship or a graphic design job before.  Most entry-level graphic design jobs are interested in your background as a graphic designer.  If courses in college are all you have, then describe them in your resume.
